The Best Ball Manifesto with Pat Kerrane and Mike Leone

Key Takeaways:

  • Stacking. Teams that had two quarterbacks and game stacked them both had an 11% increase in their advance rate. Teams that didn’t stack at all had a 4% decrease in their advance rate. If you didn’t have any QB stack in the finals, you had a 33% reduction in your chances of winning the finals. Prioritize stacking each QB you’ve drafted as your expected value goes up significantly in the playoffs.

  • Quarterbacks. Only draft 2 or 3 QBs. Taking three QBs can give you a bit of an advantage in advancing a lower owned QB that goes off in the finals. If you spend on RB and WR early, it makes more sense to take more shots on QB.

  • Running Backs. As it pertains to last year, the less draft capital you allocated to RBs, the better you did. If you’re prioritizing running backs early, you can’t take a lot of running backs. Most teams are over investing in running backs.

  • Wide Receivers. As it pertains to last year, the more draft capital you allocated to WRs, the better you did. Consider the quality of WRs you draft versus the quantity you draft. If you lean towards taking a higher quantity of WRs, make sure you take some swing on rookie WRs late and starters that will see decent volume.

  • Dead Roster Spots. Ideally you’d have as few dead roster spots as possible. Drafting closer to the start of the season does help limit your dead roster spots as we have more information and injury news to make better decisions.

  • ADP Value. Top 10% of teams on average had about 75 spots of ADP value gain.

  • The 3 Biggest Things to focus on to maximize advance rate. Scoop a ton of ADP value, take 2 QBs, and spend early on WRs.

  • Stacking QBs with with their RBs. Overall it is positively correlated. However, it may limit your overall ceiling.

  • Slow Draft vs. Fast Draft. Not much difference in getting overall ADP value.

Biggest Edges in BBM4

Key Takeaways:

  • EDGE #1: Drafting earlier in the season is a necessary evil in order to get comfortable with the player pool and ADPs. That way as we move closer to the start of the season, you’ll be cognizant of players rising and falling and can adjust your exposures accordingly.

  • EDGE #2: Top heavy payout structure with top heavy payouts. Advancing to playoffs is nothing. You need to advance to week 17 in order to get a solid payout. In order to profit, you have to swing for the fences. Will players be focusing more on Week 15 to advance to later rounds of the playoffs?

  • EDGE #3: The most over owned stacks are QB1 and WR1. Meaning if you take Stefon Diggs early, you’re more likely to reach on Josh Allen in order to get that stack. It’s not a bad strategy, but be aware that it is very popular. Less popular and QB1/WR2/WR3 stacks can provide leverage off of QB1/WR1 stacks.

  • EDGE #4: We need to understand what your opponents are doing. Using SpikeWeek tools provides the information on how much exposure other drafters have to certain stacks and how those can change over the course of the summer.

  • EDGE #5: Lean into the uncertainty and chaos. Try to take a stand on particular players that you think will rise in ADP. Particularly with murky backfields, you can take a stab on players that are tagged with uncertainty and can get them at a cheap price. Kareem Hunt and Leonard Fournette stand out as players that are dirt cheap and could instantly rise once they sign with a team.
